The prominences seen here are likely more than 10 times larger than planet Earth. Insane.
A solar prominence is a large, bright feature extending outward from the Sun’s surface, often in a loop shape. These are anchored to the Sun’s surface in the photosphere and extend outwards into the solar corona. Prominences are made of cooler, denser plasma than the surrounding solar atmosphere. Solar eclipses are special for viewing them because the Moon blocks the Sun’s bright face during a total solar eclipse, making the fainter solar corona and any prominences visible to the naked eye. This unique condition allows observers to see and study these phenomena without the need for specialized equipment to filter the Sun’s blinding light, offering a rare and valuable opportunity for direct observation.
